1/48 Scale Instead?

I’ve been browsing HobbyLinc, and I have found many different interesting armor models in 1/48 scale. I think these would be more in my budget and my experience level. What do you think?

Nope, never mind. Many more 1/35 scale stuff.

LOL. As I stated in another of your threads…ebay. I get most everything 50-75% off of retail plus shipping. Tamiya 1/48’s are almost as expensive as some of Dragon’s older 1/35’s.

Granted, there is more choice in 1/35 than 1/48, but tell me this: exactly which particular vehicle in which particular guise do you want to which does not exist in 1/48?

Sherman? Tamiya has M4’s and M4A1’s. HobbyBoss has a bunch of variations. Then there are conversion sets readily available for just about any variant imaginable.

Tiger? Tamiya and AFV Club cover Early and Late, with some very nice Zimmerit on the AFV Club Late.

Panzer IV? Tamiya has one, Bandai did some variants and there’s a resin conversion for an Ausf D. More will be coming, including a Wirbelwind (which already exists in Bandai form).

Pz III? There’s an L out by Tamiya, an N coming, some Bandai versions as well. Then you can combine it with other parts to make a J. All StuG variants are covered either by Tamiya or Bandai, or with conversion sets, and WWII Productions do Early, Mid and Late track sets.

T-34 & KV’s: HobbyBoss’ versions are among the better kits released in any scale.

I am personally focusing only on the African campaign, and I have a build list of about 35 vehicles, only released or announced, without doing the same vehicle twice, so don’t think there isn’t choice available in 1/48.

As for price, yes the Tamiya offerings are creeping up, for various reasons. However, you’ll build a 1/48 model in a fraction of the time, without losing detail. P/E is available for every kit on the market from multiple producers and one vehicle doesn’t take up a whole shelf. Also, if you’ve done aircraft in the past, you can combine some 1/48 vehicles with the 1/48 aircraft

1/48 is growing, so come on over and try it. Give the AFV Club Tiger Late a whirl and you’ll be hooked.

There’s a 1/48 Armor Group build going on right now. I think its a great scale, but the scale you pick is really just a personal choice. 1/48 Armor was only recently revived by Tamiya, but has grown substantially in the last year. Take a look at the HobbyBoss T-34 with full interior & PE, its less than $15 direct from Hong Kong, shipping included. $10 US if you are in the area.

Naaaah, I’ve got no use for 1/48 scale…small enough that many of the details are simplified, but big enough that the details count alot more than 1/72 where you don’t really kill yourself over a simplified jack block. Besides, right now there’s just TOOMUCH COOOOL stuff in 1/35!!! (Plus, painting figures in 1/48 is murder!) To each his own though…in some ways it’s like the diference between a tall Swede and a petite French madamoiselle; know what I mean?![}:)][yeah]

Bandai, if you can find them on ebay, still makes really detailed 1/48’s with interiors and engines. Diverse subjects too.

To each his own, but I will not build armor in 1/48 scale. I prefer the 1/35 scale as the superdetailing pieces aren’t at the subatomic level, and I’m getting older and the larger scale is easier for me to work with. I am seeing a ton of new 1/48 scale stuff out there, and that scale certainly leaves room for a lot more models on the shelf, but it just does nothing for me.

1/35 scale isn’t superior to 1/48, just a personal preference.
