1/48 Revell Mosquito - Complete OTB except for the shoes

This is by far my favorite twin engine aircraft of all time. I’m doing this one right out of the box. So far, I’m impressed with this Revell kit. My biggest complaint to date is the ejector pin marks. You would think they would take the time to heat the tool up then bench the pins to flush. Otherwise, it appears to be a quality kit.

I can’t wait for the Airfix 1/24 mosquito to come out. I’ll definitely be putting one on my shelf.

Thanks for looking

Nice looking work Rob!

Have you ever built the Tamiya kit? If so, how would you compare the two so far?

Thanks Frank…No. I haven’t built the Tamiya kit. Heck, I’ve never built a Mosquito before.

Cheers

I have built the Tamiya kit, and have the RoG kit in the stash. To me, it seems that the level of interior detail on the two kits (especially the bits that you’ll actually see on the completed model) is broadly comparable.maybe Tamiya have a better cockpit, and RoG a better weapons bay. The Tamiya kit comes with crew figures, for those who like that sort of thing. RoG kit comes with a couple of Merlins to put in the nacelles. RoG kit has better decals. Both are accurae enough in terms of size and outline shape.

Problem is, the RoG kit has a couple of very visible detail accuracy issues. First, the prop spinners are too blunt. Also, the u/c legs are too short, and the mainwheels too large. This will throw the whole stance of the completed model out. The Tamiya kit doesn’t have these problems.

In the UK, the Tamiya and RoG kits both retail for the same price £16.99. I would say that the Tamiya kit has a distinct edge, especially if you’re going to use aftermarket decals. Moreover, the Airfix kit, also available at this price, and one of their best-ever efforts, should not be dismissed out of hand.

As you probably know, back in the late 1970s, Airfix seriously considered doing a 1/24 Mossie, to the extent that blue-prints were drawn up for the tooling. Their 1/48 kit is based on this work, and the forthcoming Airfix 1//24 kit (not for me, I’d rather have the forthcoming Airfix 1/350 HMS Illustrious, and a couple of Dragon tanks, and enough change for some modern RN paints for Lusty) also makes use, in part at least, of it.

Cheers,

Chris

Looking great so far bud…I’m building the Tamiya MkII as we speak and I’ve noticed alot of difference in the cockpit…The Tamiya kit is going together too good man…too good. I’ve never done a Tamiya or a Mosquito before, it’s a real treat, you should try one out sometime…Check out my thread if you’d like to see the differences.

Thanks Tiny…I’ve been watching yours and another as incentive while building mine. So far the Revell kit is going together very easy as well. Almost too easy. I finished up the cockpit and forward fuselage today, moving onto the rear fuselage tomorrow and I’m going to start the engines.

Man this is fun

Cheers

Glad you’re having fun! That’s what this is all about!

Interior detail looks really sharp so far. Can’t wait to see what you can do with the outer parts!

Now I’m having fun. Made a lot of progress today. Got the fuselage bonded together, built the stabilizers, elevators, rudder, flaps, engines, tires, & bombs. She should go together really quick now.

This kit looks fun to build man…I love the twin Merlins and the flaps. I wish they would have done that with the Tamiya kit…lookin’ forward to seeing how this turns out!

Finally made my way down to the work shop today to finish up the landing gear and work on the fit issues. When I went to install the fender onto the gear legs, I found that I had installed the brackets the wrong way. I can be sooo stupid…But wait. It’s not me. Look at the instructions. I did exactly what Revell printed and believe it or not, the instructions are wrong. [#oops]

I sent an e-mail to Revell and ordered new parts. [sigh]

Look at these. I’m not too happy right now.

Another delay.[banghead]

Very tempted to make my recently purchased Tamiya FB MkVI the next project on my desk. The kit looks wonderful. Looked into a few web sites and found some great night fighter Mossies with dark gray, dark green camo on top, black undersides. Also some FBs with invasion stripes. All this talk about Mosquitos is giving me alot of ideas & inspiration for my own Tamiya kit.

Hang in there, Rob. It’s going to turn out great. Looks great so far.

I too am working on a Mosquito. Awesome plane and my kit is a Tamiya. Love them as there are rarely any fit issues.

I received an e-mail from Revell today that didn’t leave me with a warm feeling they were going to send me parts to fix the problem. I sent them the pictures of the instructions and the parts I’ve built to date. We’ll see what they say in the few days. I’m losing faith in Monogram/Revell…[banghead] I’ve been building their kits for 40+ years and this is how they handle a problem…

Here’s the landing gear assembled and the frickin tire wheel assembly will not fit due to the fender sitting in the wrong location.

Cheers

Painted her today. I need to do a lot of touch up, but overall, she turned out OK. After I touch her up, I shoot her with future.

No word from Revell yet on the landing gear. Has anyone ever complained about a problem with instructions and had the manufacture correct it?

Thanks for looking

I was able to jury rig the landing gear, but she desperately needs new shoes that are on order. Since these pictures were taken, all antennas were installed and a few touch-ups. As soon as my order from Hannets of England comes in, I’ll be able to wrap this puppy up.

Thanks for looking

Cheers

she’s a beautiful plane, love the work!

I agree- aside from the LG issue she looks very nice indeed. Well done! [:D]

Sweet lookin build!

Received the new shoes today from True Details

Should be able to wrap this bird up tomorrow if the weather is lousy.

Cheers

It is shaping up really well! I think it really captures the look. Is this the same kit that used to be Monogram where you coild make 3 versions by cutting off the nose?
