I see the 1/48 Revell F9F-8 Cougar come up on eBay every now and then. Anyone built this model? What is its origin, is it part of the 1990’s F9F family, or is it something earlier?
Also, has anyone heard anything about the new Trumpeter/Hobbycraft F9Fs that I’m seeing advertised for pre-orders lately?
The kit is a rebox of the Hawk kit. No cockpit, no wheel well detailing, and has decal locations raised. It will take a lot of work to bring it up to todays standards.
I built the 1954 version, in 1954. As Berny says, no cockpit. The pilot’s head and shoulders are molded to the airframe. I don’t remember the landing gear. I used Revell cement to build it, and it didn’t bond very well. I could peal the glue off, and separate the parts. But I did craze the canopy until you could not see through it. I believe that '84 version is a remanufacture from Mexico. I don’t think it was ever a Hawk molding.
I have a Revell F9F-8 kit number 4430 that was issued in 1985. Not much better than the old Hawk kits of the late 50’s except it doesn’t have the raised national insigna makings. The whole cockpit is one peice with intrument panel pilot, seat and rear deck. Only valuable to a “kit” collector in my opinion. Keep hoping Revellogram would make late model Cougar. Hobby Craft “lied” for years about coming out with one.
