Some of you might remember about 2 weeks ago I made a post about trying my hand at a larger scale as a usually model in 1/72. I decided on the 1/48 p-47d bubble top by Tamiya. The kit has been great. I honestly cant see myself ever going back to 1/72 scale again! I am really enjoying this build. I have included some pics of the engine and cocpit. I am also going to be trying my first NMF using Alclad 2 on this one and am hoping I dont screw it up. The finnished bird will be done up as a fictional bird named “flyin-ky” after my girl. with the airbase letters being her initials and the serial number being our aniversary. Looking good, Steve. Welcome to the Dark Side (1/48 scale aircraft)! I’m afraid to dabble too much in 1/32 for the same reason. The larger the kit, the more detail (usually). You’ve picked a great kit in the Tamiya P-47D.
The kit is just falling together, definately one of the easiest kits i’ve ever assembled. Zip its good to be back. With school/work/making decals. I have been incredibly busy since august. This is the first i’ve even attempted to build anything since the fall semester started.
Yep Steve, you picked a great to give a try. I have to tell you though that I also LOVE the 1/72 tamiya t-bolts. Those are also really nice… Looking forward to seeing more. Leon
Looks like you’re off to a good start! I’m currently working on the Tamiya P-47 Razorback, and I love the way it’s going together.
I also used to build a lot of 1/72 scale to supplememnt my die-cast collection, but I keep coming back to 1/48 because it seems to eb the perfect compromise between detail and size - small enough to fit on shelves - large enough to add a reasonable amount of detail.

SKTdawg here. I have been out for about 2 years now I had some money troubles and then when i got the money back they had just switched to ah2 and i didnt have the machine to run it. Now I have the machine to run it and back in money problems. I will be back to stay for good in about 6 months. Please tell everybody A big fat Hail Sky Knights for me. And I am going to try (beg) hitech to get two free weeks and get up with you guys soon over christmas break. I’ll be back. Once a skyknight always a skyknight.

Alright well I’ve been chugging along nicely on this bubbletop and I must say I am converted. This 1/48 stuff is AWESOME!!! I have shot a layer of primer to try and expose some imperfections. Just need a bit more puttying and a tad of sanding and this thing should be ready for some alclad II. This is the most fun I’ve had with a model ever. This model was built gear-up as the start of a project my dad and I have been talking about doing forever. We want to create a sort of “dogfight room” Where you walk in and on the cieling above you there is an entire dogfight taking place. I can remember talking about this with him ever since I can remember doing models. No time to start like the present.

I’ll be using alclad II polished aluminum. Not sure how much weathering is going to be on this one. Pretty sure its going to be done up as a show bird. But we’ll see…
Well I had my first shot at spraying some alclad II polished aluminum today. I have to say it was easy. I did mess up a little bit but I think its more to do with my primer, as it looked like some of the areas are not as glossy i can only guess this is because of a bad priming job. One question I had about it was when i weather a bird my last step is usually a flat clear coat. I was wondering if this was the same with the alclad, or if a flat finnish will take off too much of the shine.

Well we finished up the painting. I guess I just needed more practice with the alclad, I shot another coat and I really got it to even out nicely. Tomorrow will be future, then decaling after the weekend. Here are some pics of the progress. Comments are always welcom.
