1/48 Monogram PBY-5 for almost $100?

“FYI the kit is not a Pro Modeler kit. It is a standard PBY-5…”

Youre right, I dont know where that came from. Comments edited above. Thanks.

I don’t have a scanner handy, so I’ll paste a couple of links to built models of both versions.

Cheers!

Thanks Arki, that really helped! Now I know I MUST have the -5A.

An FYI for when you do acquire your Catalina, if you think some of the WWII tricycle gear bombers are tail-sitters i.e. B-25, you haven’t seen anything until you build the Cat.

I’d recommend stocking up on lead weights now. Or buy a lead factory.

Where’s this shop? I might have to break the mower…

Ebay is a seller’s market for some kits at the moment. I listed an old Revell Oriskany carrier kit a few weeks ago, expecting around $20 and got $237. I was quite happy until I remembered that property taxes were due. Easy come, easy go.

Some Revell-Monogram kits go for hefty prices. A year ago C-47s were going for $60-$70 on Ebay. Now they are running around $35. Romors have floated around that the molds for the old Revell B-17F in 1/48 were destroyed, so prices of those have been high for a while. Last time it came up around here, I think Swanny confirmed that the molds are still intact and the kit will be released again.

The old Visible B-17 that hasn’t been released in a long time has been going for over $100 on Ebay for a few years. Revell has announced its re-release within a few months, so the prices should be dropping soon.

BTW, someone asked for the difference between the -5 and -5A PBY. The only difference is that the PBY-5A has landing gear and the PBY-5 is a pure flying boat without landing gear. The kit comes with beaching gear though.

I believe the PBY-5 kit was the first release of this kit and the Pro Modeler -5A was the second release. It’s possible that RM retooled the molds for the second release and the molds for the -5 do not exist any more. That may be one thing driving the price up.
