Can you believe it? Four days to go and it’s already at almost a hundred bucks!

It’s incredible what some people will pay for a kit.
[#ditto] Chances are if I payed for that or any collectible kit, I would never build it.
Nope, not suprised at all. Those don’t usually average $100, but occassionally a bidding war will flare out of control. I think I paid $60ish for my 1/48 -5A, almost 3 years ago. Supply and demand.
If Trumpeter produced a 1/48 PBY they would price it about there, I betcha. It is a lot of plastic. I hear they did not sell well, so Monogram probably won’t reissue them much more often than they do the 1/48 B-1. I have 2 5A’s and one 5 and don’t plan on selling any of them. Hope I get to them in my lifetime!
A C-note? Geez, man…I got mine for under $60 earlier this year…retail.
It’s a great kit - and it makes a pretty impressive display when done.
It’s a huge expanse of plastic - you’d expect those 3 massive wing pieces to be warped a little - but they were dead straight - impressive.
I guess when people really want something, price is no barrier.
Yes, I have been watching them on Evilbay for some time looking to get one for a decent price. Some go for around $50-$60, but I have never seen one go this high with over four days left in the bidding!
John- Sounds like you have quite a stash of them, kinda like me with my AMT XB-70 Valkyries.[:D]
Way over my Budget, but if somebody really, really, really wants one, it’s not as outrageous as some I’ve seen.
Regards, Rick
Well, yes, I do like my PBY’s. I have the Belcher Bits sets to fix the tails and convert one to the PBY-2 also. Wish I knew where I’m going to display them when I do build them.
Use to have 3 XB-70’s but I sold one to a friend. Like them too. [;)]
I hope to get a PBY soon for my collection, if I can get one for a decent price. Is there a huge difference between the -5 and the Pro Modeler -5A?
The -5A is the amphibious version of the Catalina. IMHO, visually it looks better than the -5 with the beaching wheels.
Does anyone have a photo showing the difference between the two?
Ain’t that a kick? I kept watching the -5 and -5A going for really off the wall prices on EvilBay, so I pretty much gave up on getting one. I went into a local mower repair shop last spring to get a part for my tractor and find out that the owner is also a modeler and has a bunch of kits for sale! He has a 1:48 -5 sitting there, I asked him what it was going for and he says $20! I almost broke my arm reaching for my wallet! I resisted further temptation with a 1:24 Airfix Me-109 for $30…[8D]

Good score Brian! I picked up a brand new 1/48 Pro Modeler JU-88 at a garge sale this summer for fifty cents! Good deals out there, never know when you will stumble upon one.
Ask, and ye shall receive. Check this out:

Thanks for the link, Frank! I just may order one to go with the -5; after all, a man can’t have too many flying boats…just wish that the 1:48 Shorts Sunderland I saw wasn’t $300…[:O]

$27.99 isn’t bad at all for that, considering what it was on Ebay, but that was a collectors kit though right?
Smart seller and a good business man. I’m putting him in my preferred sellers list.
FYI the kit is not a Pro Modeler kit. It is a standard PBY-5, I have 2 of the kits. Pro Modeler made a PBY-5A. Monogram never re-issued the PBY-5 but did re-issue the PBY-5A as a Monogram kit.
Probably the reason for the high bid is because the PBY-5 was never re-issued.
Pro Modeler kits have the Pro Modeler logo on the box not Monogram.
By thunder, you’re right! I am gonna edit the title to avoid any confusion. Thanks for pointing that out!
“FYI the kit is not a Pro Modeler kit. It is a standard PBY-5…”
Youre right, I dont know where that came from. Comments edited above. Thanks.
