Finished off this one today, one of my favourite aircraft the F-105 Thunderchief (Thud), this the G version. I will admit I love the SEA schemes on these but I thought I would go different and do silver….yes silver, this is not a natural metal or bare metal finish, it is of an aircraft painted silver, hence no tonal variations. It is OOB, I used Vallejo’s new metal paint, Silver, and quite liked it. Very thin like Alclad, but it is acrylic. Tamiya olive drab did the anti-glare strip. I also gave it a Flory dark dirt wash to take some shine out of the silver. I think the blue on the US stars is to light but I used them anyway. The main gear legs seem a bit flimsy, but I will leave it upside down for a few days, maybe they will set a bit harder. I was going to have the gun bay open but the canon is really fragile and I broke 2 barrels getting them off the sprue. I will definitely be doing another. I have the D version and Trumpeters 1/32 D and G in the stash.
I would love to see a real one of these, I sat this next to my 1/48 F-111 and it is almost the same size, they must be a huge aircraft!
Very nice job. On the yellow band around the canopy, did you use a mask? I am also interested in the Vallero metallic colors, I just started using this brands military flat colors and was quite impressed.
Very nice Thud Grant! That silver/olive drab look is quit captivating. You rarely ever see the 2 seat Gs in silver, mostly just the earlier F’s. Sorry to to tell you about the gear, but it it so weak, I don’t see it stiffening up at all. Not on the D I just built anyway.
Hi, Grant - Great 105 build, I think one of your best that I’ve seen. A question if you don’t mind, did you find the Vallejo silver to be a fairly durable finish that stands up well to masking and decaling? I’ve not used it, but it sounds interesting.
Thanks Patrick, this is Vallejo’s new range (32ml bottles and called metal color). It is hard as nails once dry mate, handle it as much as you like (none will wear off) and masking it up no problems (no peeling off). Just use a primer before you spray it down, I just used Stynylrez grey primer for this model as I was not looking for a high shine finish.
