1/48 Hasegawa Fw 190 A-8 JG 300 "Ernst Schroder" (FINISHED)

After completing a few large scale subjects, I figured needed to go back to my roots for a bit (so I don’t forget!)…1/48. Of course I’m staying with the Luftwaffe. Here’s the first of three I’m building simultaneously, the Hasegawa Fw190 A-8. I’ve done several Hasegawa 1/48 190s, but this is my first A-8. It’s actually the cover art that sparked my interest, Ernst Schroder’s “Red 19” of JG 300. Schroder was far from being an “Uber Ace”, but he did flame 7, to include a few P-51s and B-24 heavies. I also learned that he was an avid scale modeler like us!. I’ll use an Ultracast seat, tires, and I have some brass guns I’m gonna shoehorn in. Coincidentally I have an Eagle Cal sheet with Shroder’s markings. Please join me.

Except for the Ultracast seat, the pit was done out of the box. I must say I’m now used to the larger 1/32 detail as I found myself squinting alot…lol.

The 190 cockpit was kind of basic to begin with,so all it needed was a touch of drybrushing and a wash…

The IP dials were the kit decal. I find I have better results when they are clear, as opposed to black with white dials.

These are fairly painless and I was here in no time. Even the 4 piece cowl went together without issue.

O, nice, will be looking forward to this, great start as always.

I’ve got Red 19 in a 72nd Hase kit, nice subject. Never knew he was a model builder.

Another nice start Joe. Really nice work on the pit. That IP looks great! I’ve been watching your recent paint testing with interest…what will you be using on this one?

Interesting story. Gotta love the fact he was a scale modeler too! I’m always quite impressed with your cockpits. In fact, I have your tutorial printed out and it stays in my paint drawer for quick reference!

I find myself reminded of a couple of fun 190 GB’s we had in the past.

Good to see a classic Lawdog Joe cockpit, and interesting that you are finding 1/48 a bit small.

This is, as always, will look amazing

As always Joe that’s a beautiful start. You’ve got those Luftwaffe cockpits down to a science. =]

Thanks guys…

Andy, I’m gonna try this stuff out. I bought their RLM 74, 75,76. They don’t offer 70,71 and 65 yet but It’s my understanding it’s coming. I’ll tell you all what I think.

What a great start. I’m anxious to see how you like this line of paint!

Toshi

Keen to see what you make of this.

Yes, do tell. Waiting with bated breath…

Lawdog,

Beautiful start as always. I have always enjoyed your WiP’s…it never fails that I learn something new from your detailed builds and history of your subject. Once again, wonderful start and I’ll be here to the end.

Thanks a pants load guys. I sat down last night and got some work in, particularly on the 190 and 109 with the test run using Mission Paint. I watched a turorial on You Tube and discovered you have mix the paint with their thinner then add a few drops of their “poly intermix”, which I presume is a conditioner or leveler of some type. I’m glad I bought those too. I used the “drop” measuring method with the following ratio in a paint palette:

10 drops of paint

4 drops of thinner

2 drops of Poly

I mixed it then got to painting. I layed down the RLM 76 and I was pleased with the color. It looked dead on. Coverage was good and it dried to a nice eggshell finish, which I prefer. I mixed in some of their white and I was able to fade it.

Next I moved on to the RLM 75, which again I thought it was perfect to my eye. It went down great. I added some white and faded/streaked it a bit.

I used Blue Tac “worms” for the demarcation lines then sprayed the RLM 74. Again, Mission nail this color too. I’m very pleased. I added some of their Beige that I bought (a Britsh color, was looking for the equivalent to Tamiya Buff) and faded it.

Verdict?..I think I found a viable replacement for Gunze. I was originally concerned because it’s thicker than I’m used to. But don’t be fooled, this stuff sprays great. The colors are dead on, go down nice, and dry to the touch quick. I like the mottling and fading effects I can get too. One noteable caveat, do not let this stuff dry in your airbrush as it hardens like toothpaste. Let some dry overnight in your palette and try to scrape it out. You’ll see what mean. Clean it out immediately with their thinner or water. I found that Alcohol doesn’t work very well. I havent tried Lacquer thinner yet. I may try their flat coat as a replacement to Testors dull.

Looking real nice, and thanks for the info on the paint.

Yeah that looks great Joe! As Bish said thanks for the paint info.

The information on your paints are priceless. It sounds like you really enjoyed working with this product. It sounds like the AB just needs to be thoroughly cleaned.

Everything thing looks great, I’ll be waiting for your next progress on this issue.

Gorgeous already, Joe. I love watching you paint. You always seem to nail a perfect finish and you make it look easy.

This is why my builds end up sitting at the painting stage lately. I need some new tools and supplies so I can get such results too lol.

Im looking forward to picking up a real compressor soon.

Looks pretty good to me Joe, and your review of the paint is some nice information to have

I like the look of the paint, nicely done! This is a water base type of paint you are using?

Thanks guys. I’m glad my assessment was helpful.

Tosh, your probably right. I’m still trying to get used to this new Iwata.

Trey, it is water based, but they recommend their thinner only, to clean the airbrush too. It has no odor at all, which is nice. I just got their Flat and Gloss to see how well they perform. I’m tired of the fumes and dust cloud from Testors Dull and Gloss. I also picked up their version of Non Specular Blue and Intermediate Blue for the Corsair. I hope to have the same results.

Anyways, bench time is at a premium lately…couple minutes here…couple minutes there. I did sit down and weather this thing (and the 109) with diluted red brown (XF-64) and NATO black (XF-69). This looks about right to my eye.

I’ll be throwing down some gloss soon.
