1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18E Royal Maces

Hi guys. I just finished this for the Ground Attack GB. Its the 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18E Super Hornet. I’m happy with the way she turned out .

Stuff I used:

  • Eduard PE cockpit detail set
  • GBU-24s and AGM-65 from the Hasegawa weapons sets
  • GBU-38s and the AGM-65 rail from Wolpack resin
  • Afterburner Royal Maces decals
  • True Details ejection seat
  • AIM-9Xs from a Tamiya F-16 kit

I rescribed all the panel lines on this bird, painted it with Mr. Color paint and weathered it with post shading and oil paints. The ladder is modified kit parts with some scratch parts. The canopy is polished but not Futured. The bombs have ablative coating made by dapping on Mr. Surfacer 500 with an old brush.

This represents the Royal Maces CAG plane as it appeared in 2008. Hope you enjoy it!

I noticed that you did not use any folded wing AM kit. Any comment on doing folded wing OOB with this kit?

keilau, no problem. The inside of each wing half has lines that you follow to seperate the wings. They look like recessed panel lines on the inside of the parts. I just used the back of a #11 blade to cut along the lines and then used a file to smooth out the edges and joints. You need to be careful, though, because there are a few 90 degree corners that you can cut into or break off if you are too heavy handed.

After you cut them out you just build them like regular kit parts.

The hinges are supplied in the kit.

That is one great build! I love your work on the weapons - i don’t know how you guys get them looking so good!

One question, you said you rescribed the kit - does it come with raised panel lines? I thought a kit of this subject and from Hasegawa would certainly have recessed panel lines.

The main reason I rescribed this kit was that I had just received a UMM scriber and I wanted to try it out. I was just about to get married and all of my modeling stuff was boxed up so I really couldn’t work on any of my models. I rescribed this to practice and kill some time. Plus, some of the panel lines around the joints were lost during construction.

As far as the weapons go…you just treat each one like its a small individual kit.

Ah, I see - you’re a brave soul practicing rescribes on a kit like this - but it sure paid off!
