1/48 Hasegawa F-2A....The Japanese F-16

Hi guys! I finished this one back in May I think but I never got around to posting any pictures here. I did on the ARC forums, though, I think in the critique sub forum.

Anyway, here it is. It went together mostly good. There weren’t really any trouble areas. Some stuff I added:

  • Shull24 resin exhaust
  • Eduard PE interior details
  • Weapons from the Hasegawa JASDF weapons set
  • DXM decals for the generic markings
  • Static wicks on the trailing edges
  • A spare resin ACES II ejection seat
  • Pitot tube from a Tamiya F-16

I painted it with Mr Color paints as per the instructions. The marking are from a plane wearing the 6 sqn 50th Anniversary colors. Hope you enjoy it!

Very nicely done! I do like the paint scheme! The Japanese come up with some pretty sharp one off paint jobs.

VERY VERY nice… You have obviously built, detailed, painted several models. I would like to ask what is your technique for painting the fine details such as the white lines, panel lines and rivets. The white lines look to be very straight with sharp edges… From the pictures, very very nice

Wow. That sucker is mean looking! Like the detail on the exhaust. That resin really makes it pop

Fantastic build! I’m bookmarking it for reference when I pop the wrapper on my kit. Where did you source the resin exhaust - don’t recognize the manufacturer.

Thank you! Yeah, it was the paint scheme that made me want to build this. I think it looks really good on these F-2s.

Thanks! The white lines are from the DMX decal sheet although the kit includes these decals. But the Hasegawa decals are notoriously thick. These are standard markings on the F-2s. I did a wash for the panel lines and rivets. One of the problems with this kit is that the panel lines weren’t done very well. In some places they are very shallow or non existent. Same with the rivets. You can see how some of the lines are washed and some aren’t. I really should have rescribed the lines myself.

Very, very nice. How did you mask the camo? Decals and everything else are nicely done. This is for sure a show winner.

I masked the camo using Silly Putty worms. I just followed the lines on the instruction sheet. It was actually very easy to do!

Funny thing is that I did enter it into our local IPMS contest. When I set it on the table I figured it would place based on the competition. And I don’t mean any disrespect to the other modelers, of course. Well, it didn’t even get an award. Several of us were scratching our heads saying huh? One guy had a big 'ole scratch on his model, pointed it out on his entry form (he blamed it on the car ride over) and took home first place. Go figure. A couple other categories had some strange decisions, too.

Oh well. I didn’t argue and I figure I need to respect the judges decision. I wasn’t gonna be “that guy.” Plus, it wasn’t the end of the world.

Great-looking build! Very impressive. Great attitude as far as the contest award, too. Too bad it didn’t win, though…

Very nice looking, But I would like to know what steps you took to paint the exhaust pipe.

I don’t know how I missed this one. Beautiful work. Its weird seeing the meatballs on anything without a prop and peeling paint. Thanks for sharing.
