1/48 figures from Tamiya

Tamiya has announced the release of this 15-figure set in 1/48 scale:

Recognize any of those guys? [;)]

Just thought ya’ll would like to see the pic.

haha, those are like all of their most basic molds!

With Tamiya obviously trying to capture a new market with their plunge into 1/48, it will be interesting to see how long before others, like Dragon/DML, enter the 1/48 race. I suppose a lot will depend on Tamiyas success in this venture.

Regards, Rick

They look pretty darned good for 1/48th scale. Warrior has gotten into the game too and produced a 1/48th scale Tiger crew.

I like the tank commander leaning into the cupola the most. He’s cool, and is definitely going into my Tiger I. Thanks for the heads up.

So far, for AFVs it looks like:

Tiger I
Stug IIIb
Hetzer

Sherman M4
Sherman M4A1
M10
M36

T34/76 Cast turret

A new T34 from Tamiya! I can’t wait. I would love to see them do an IS-2 and an ISU-152. A Pz later model III or a Pz IV (a G or early H) would be nice too, to go along with the Tiger.

Don’t know, but Fine Molds is doing two quarter scale Tiger Is. One competes directly with Tamiya (I’ll pass on that one), the other is a late-model Tiger I – complete with zimmerit already on it! It looks gorgeous too. That one I’ll get.

Same here!

whats up with Tamiya and this scale anyway? It use to be for wargamers and model railroads. Glad to see Dragon/DML makeing great kits and in more then one scale[^)[%-)]But i do see alot of aftermarket stuff coming out for these kits and they do seem to be very nice kits might be fun to try and build something in a smaller scale and in detail. But I rather have 1/35 kits myself

What’s up with it is they are now releasing kits in this scale.

But … it’s not ok for Tamiya to do the same?

It’s never been a wargaming scale.

As to the model railroading stuff, that’s one more example of the beautiful 1/48th scale syncronicity – the tanks are indeed O gauge. So you can play battle of the bulge with your 1/48th scale King Tiger and your model railroad! So your big scale trains, your aircraft models and your armor can be all the same scale.

That’s a very good point, Larry. While most proponents of this latest boom in 1/48 armor have been touting the compatibility with 1/48 aircraft, I think you’re much more likely to see a tank next to train (or in a railroad scene) than anywhere near an aircraft. I always thought the aircraft compatibility angle was pretty weak, aside from the possibilities with jeeps, Kubelwagens, and other softskin vehicles.

It is fairly weak in terms of dioramas, but for kits you display out of a diorama, it is interesting to see what a FW-190 looked like compared to a Panzer III. And once they go modern, the comparisons between the tanks and the helicopters will be really interesting.

but arent most heli kits in 1/35th already?

Quarter scale is the big aircraft scale, though there certainly are plenty of 1/35th scale heli kits. They’re pretty big though.

Not to hyjack the thread but also in that link, is that M10 in 1/48 also and when is it going to be out?

Yes, it is 1/48th. Don’t know when the release date is, though. Expect to see an M36 too!

Cause those new 1/48 shermans are the same scale as trains, I can finally biuld the rail station scene form Kelly’s Heros

well i guess it will save space and money, well i dont know it is from Tamiya[(-D] Now i need a train set

The great thing about it is that they now have the incentive to go back and revisit some of the old vehicles they got wrong in 35th. Why should they bother redoing the Tiger with an asymmetric turret when Dragon just has? Why bother redoing the T34 to correct it if Dragon already has? 35th is glutted. 48th is a scale that is fresh – it’s virgin territory. The 48th Tiger has the correct turret. The 48th Sherman fixes some of the problems 35th Shermans have.

And it definitely will be easier to display them, while at the same time they aren’t tiny like 72nd is. It’s a nice in-between compromise scale.

Well it is a nice in-between scale I guess, and i do see some after market stuff for this like metal barrels, tracks, engine set,and photo-etched set. would be fun to build. But right now my model shop has to come down on that Tamyia price alittle $27bucks for it here B,ham,Ala. and the after market extras arent cheap either.
