Hey ladies and gents,
I’m looking for info on who makes a 1/48 F-18D. I plan on using Two Bobs sheet 48-072 F/A-18C/D T-bolts and Vikings. My bro-in-law is a Colonel with the 1st Marine Division, currently deployed in Iraq on his second tour, and I think a “D” with the 1st MarDiv Blue Diamond would be a nice tribute to him. I’m not a rivet counter so as long as it looks like a two-seat Hornet, that’s good enough for me. I’m more concerned about who makes one, it’s fit, construction issues, etc.
Thanks in advance,
-Omar
As far as I can see no one make a D model F/A-18, but it looks like there are conversion set available for the Hasegawa C model.
Omar,
Hasagawa makes a nice 1/48 F/A-18D. The kit comes with VMFA-242 (the Bats) markings. Roll Models (www.rollmodels.com) is selling it for $41.25.
Semper Fi!
Carl
Thanks Carl. Thanks for the info.
I just got that kit yesterday from Sprue Brothers. Very nice kit … Eduard also makes a detail kit for it that is quite extensive… let me know if you want some pics of anything.
[D)][D)] Stupid me skipped right over it. Sorry bout that.
No worries falcon039. You can redeem yourself by finding out if there’s a wingfold set for the Hornet out there somewhere. [:D]
Actually, if ANYONE knows if there’s a wingfold set in 48th, I’d appreciate it.
A68Trans-AmMustang, could you tell me what’s included in the detail set?
I think the Hasagawa kit does have wing-fold.
A68Trans-AmMustang…can you confirm?
Not the ‘D’ to my knowledge Dragonfire… I do have a ‘C’ that does though… the hinges are cast white metal… you have to cut the wings apart and glue the hinges in place sandwiching them in between the seams…

Just about everything i think… ALOT of the cockpit stuff is in there… including acetate gauges…alot of external things too… like the boarding ladder…gear bay details… chaff/flare dispenser… slime light framing. Also canopy framing, mirrors,… just too much to list really…but I do know you won’t go wrong buying one though…[:p]
A68: That’s what I saw…the “Charlie” model with folding wings. [8D] If Omar wanted to get really froggy, he could kit bach the “C” kit for the wing tips and add them to the “D”, but I’m pretty sure there’s and AM product that has the hinge he needs.
The thing about the wingfold on the D is, that you’ll never see them folded. Marine D’s don’t go to the boat, ever. (D’s don’t have the gas that Cs do, so you can’t bounce them at their max trap - and I think the Navy only takes B’s vice Ds – and that’s just the RAG). On land, you’ll rarely (if ever) see a Hornet with it’s wings folded – often times, the only birds you’ll see with wings folded on the ground are the larger ones like E2/C2s or S-3s
just FYI
Matt’s correct, the “Deltas” hardly ever go to the carrier, though they are capable. Occasionally the Marines will put a couple on a big deck for a local exercise but that’s it. Most of the time they’re on deck, wings are out.
Thanks for the input everyone. I really appreciate the info.
As it turns out, the wing fold wouldn’t be for the D model. I have an old Revellogram C that I’d like to experiment with. Besides, I don’t know how’d I’d feel about cutting up a $40.00US+ kit. Or, for that matter, “bashing” TWO!
Omar,
I hear ya. [:)] I’m not a big fan of kit bashing unless I REALLY have to. It’s a last resort, just like a mech doesn’t want to cann a part off another plane on the flight-line unless he has to. Not to mention the extra cost. Have fun!

Omar,
I guess the wrong term to use was the word ‘cutting’ the wings apart. Hasegawa had the forsight of scribing a line to use as a guide to seperate the wings. It is actually a pretty easy process of just scoring the guide line until the pieces seperate. Then once that is done you glue the seperate upper/lower wing sections together and then glue in the ‘hinge’ into the ends of the wings.Hasegawa has very nice kits,if you buy one you will soon realize that one kit from them won’t be enough. Hope this helped you! [:D]
