1/48 Airfix Mosquito kit

Hi all:
I was in a hobby shop last week, and I saw two kits of the Mosquito from Airfix. I asked the owner what he knew about the kit. He said it has the Rolls Royce 2 stage Merlin engines, and that the kit is not that bad. According to him, it’s a lot better than the old airfix kit. Any body built this kit yet? I would like to know before I buy it, then but it in my closet with the rest of my unbuilt kits. thanks.

I have not built mine yet, but it is a nice kit. Better than the old Monogram vesion, fo sure. It’s not Hasegawa or Tamiya quality bit it’s not old Airfix either.

The kit I looked at in the local hobby shop has new tool wings and engines with recessed panel lines and old tool fuselage with raised panel lines. Of course the Mossie doesn’t have an abundance of panel lines, so scribing shouldn’t be a major task. I have no idea how it fits, but I’m always skeptical when old and new tools are mated. If you want this version of the Mossie, go for it. If you aren’t particular about version, I would go with the Excellent Tamiya kit.

Mine has retooled wings and fuselage. I have almost enough stuff in the box to build two Mossies! The new tooling does look nice but like Aurora, I have not built mine either. Just adding it to the very large pile in the closet - actually, it wouldn’t fit in the closet. Note to self, get bigger closet.

I presume you are taking about the B/PR Mk XVI ?? It has retooled wings, nacelles and fuselage. There is so much in the box you could almost build two Mossies. I think the old MkVI (1980) has donated some parts, like the undercarriage and it#8217;s full of sinkmarks, ejectermarks. The new tooling however is nice, not to much detail though. Dry-fitting has shown no fit-problems but then I#8217;ve only just started. Colour coding is not to clear, having built a Tamiya mossie, I use their instructions for colour reference.
I started the mossie a while ago, I wanted to make the B version. But have had to shelf it for now, due to the fact that a few parts are broken, like the tailwheel support. Until I can get them replaced it will remain shelved. As Rick said, unless you must have a Mk XVI, go with one of the Tamiya offerings.
