1/48 Academy SBD-2

I have a dumb question. I picked up an Academy (Accurate Minatures Mold) 1/48 SBD-2 and it is by far the worst kit I have ever seen in terms of flash - almost every part contains flash and will require intrigate sanding to clean the detail parts up. I can deal with this but I was wondering if the original Accruate Minatures had the same heavy flash? Just trying to figure this out for my own curiousity.

No. The Accurate kits were top notch in the box… superb moldings.

I must have got a dud then, this Academy kit is gonna be lots of extra work lol

sorry, I put Academy when I meant to put Accurate…

Thanks for the info stikpusher, very much appreciated [:)]

You’re welcome. But Academy surprises me as well. I’ve built many of their kits and have many more in my stash. Aside from their early clone kits from when they first arrived here back in the 80’s, I’ve never had any flash on their kits. Their plastics quality control has been great. Now their decals on the other hand…

I have always been happy with Academy as well but my experience has always been with 1/72. This is my first adventure into 1/48 (my eyes are getting old so hope the larger scale helps lol)

suck

Many do… but not all… Some kits come with Cartograph Decals. The box usually reflects that.

Really? That’s why I like Italeri. IMO Academy kit decals are not only salami slice thick, but not true white and also off color.

I just bought the AM B-25B on 1/48 in the Academy rebox. the plastic looks fine, and I can’t vouch for the decals until i try to use them. But the printing on the back is in Korean. Something about Americans are barking dogs…

I’ll be stuck if they don’t work, as the subject is unique. Lawson’s plane.

Too bad about that SBD. If the OP is still listening, did you buy it from a true dealer?

Seriously? Is that what you pass off as humor?

I’ve seen worse here…

I got their Apache AH.1 recently and noted that comes with cartograph deacls, must be a new thing. Lots of companies seem to be following the same route, Airfix is useing decals made by them as wel.

I have not had major issues with flash on Academy kits. Maybe this was just a bad batch.

I thought it was quite funny, but maybe thats just me. [:D]

I just pulled my AM SBD-3 from the stash and there is not any flash at all. Everything about the kit is top quality.

This is a 2005 release.

AM did have problems towards the end, maybe the OP has one that was a last run and somebody didn’t pay attention while shooting the molds.

I find almost every manufacturer who has been around for awhile occasionally re-issues kits, and when they do, I find the molding not the best on some kits, even from mfgs who now provide exquisite molding. I note, in many cases when a manufacturer issues a new kit of a subject they have done before, they tout in their release literature “new molds.” I thank them for this- it helps me decide whether or not to pick up the kit.

I had a good chuckle on that one too, Bill.

Most of Italeri is Academy molds at twice the Academy price.

Really, i would say most is stretching it a bit. I’m not aware of any. Other people re-box Italeri kits and Academy started out ripping off other peoples moulds.

Yeah, but you’ve got that British sense of humor…
