Ok guys I bit the bullet and started a few of the troop kits I have very late lastnight…I needed to finish off a roll of film so I shot some pics.
Mike(Renarts)…thanks for the flesh formula…the pics are a lil blurry but the paint mixxing went well…though I had it a lil “hot” at first…looked like a bad mix of mustard and ketchup so I added a lil more brown and white…and was happy with it so I threw the batch in a spare bottle…
These figs still have a long way to go before completion but I’ve started…

Btw does anyone have any tips for painting 35th scale ammo belts?
You’re off to a flying start Chris … pics are a little too fuzzy for these old eyes to see much … but they at least have a flesh tone on them. [:D]

Be sure to dry fit your arms to your bodies to be sure there are no serious fit problems. Much easier to fill, finish and paint all at one time rather than do patch work later.
I’ll get with you on a way to mount them for painting and you’ll be able to move them right to your base whn thy’re done.

Use a thin/fine brush for the belts. I think that’s the only way to go unless you want to airbrush.
The smallest brush I have right now is a 20/0 heck thats the smallest my LHS carries…
I was just looking at these and they still look a lil “warm” to me especially for winter soldiers in the European Theatre…will the washes Im planning on doing help tone it down some…also what type of glue would you recommend using…I have Ambroid Pro weld…Medium gap filling CA…and regular CA…

I just use Tamiya Thin Cement for the tightfitting joints. For those with slight gaps, I use the ordinary Tamiya Cement. (Do I sound like a Tamiya salesman already?)
Chris, I find it better to actually build the figures first before painting… The reson for this is that leaving them on the trees, it’s much harder to remove the molding lines, and that by cutting off the pre-painted figure from the tree, you’ll still have to re-touch it with yet more paint. Also, in terms of fit and filling gaps, you’ll have less trouble!
A little blurry, yes. But looks like things are shaping up pretty nicely.
I agree with Dj. I build the figures up first, put a tiny drop of superglue on the left or right heel and stick em on scrap plastic before painting them.
Those are the Tamiya Machine gunners right??? I loved that kit and Im getting another soon for my new dio after I’m done. The belt, all I do is spray the whole thing gold, then I take a brush, some testors flat black, and I do each individual bullet, and the results are very satisfying.
Don’t you find it rather hard to clean off all the mold lines with the parts still on the sprue? And what about shading? hard to tell where the shadows should fall if the figures aren’t built!
As for the ammo belts, spray with gold, (Tamiya enamel has very fine grain, better than their Acrylic) once dry, a wash with dark brown will tone it down and give a little depth, then paint the link with black and the bullets with a copper colour.

Thanks for the tips about the Ammo Belts guys…Ive kinda set these aside abit, but I worked on them some this morning for a few hours…One of the body halves I fitted has a horrid gap, so I took some Tamiya smooth Surface Epoxy Putty placed it in between the body halves(Kinda like a heavily loaded sandwhich when you squish it and stuff gushes out!)pressed them together and trimmed the excess…Im letting it dry today then I’ll go back with some thin gap filling CA to make sure its secure…so far it seems to have worked pretty well.
