Added the anchor chains, the sink markers, that white line on the bow, for whatever it does, the small boats and some acrylic varnish as a gap filler to the hull. I will be repainting after it all dries. The small boats will be attached to boat booms.
OK guys, I’m starting to get really excited about this one. If I work on it constantly I should be at the rigging stage in about 2 weeks. I will need to scratch the SCR-584 radar trailer strapped to the bridge roof and bow and stern boat booms.
I repainted the base and added the first coat of acrylic varnish. Note the missing 8” gun barrels from the Anton turret. These were removed at the Philadelphia shipyard for further study in Virginia.
This thread keeps an idea nibbling at my noggin–get a set of 1/35 PT Boat Crewmne and a 1/35 Flakvierling, and set that up as if it were a demonstration shoot.
1/700 scale lettering by Woodland Scenes. At that scale they were a little difficult to get straight especially since they were dry trransfer and I only had a few X’s and Z’s.
I got the color of the water right and I couldn’t resist this shot. I wanted to lighten it up to more of an Azure blue since it is near an atol an not in the deep ocean.
I also constructed the radar trailer for the bridge. It’s made from balsa wood and the dish is from scrap some PE.
I still have quite a bit to do to the ship. The aft superstructure and lots of rigging.
Diffrent lighting, diffrent color shade. This is the actual color.
And the trailer.
What you’ve done so far looks very nice. I wonder if there’s any chance you could post larger sized images so we could check out the detail of your build a little better?
Am I correct in assuming that you’ve only placed the railing that’s not painted for showing how it’ll look or do you actually glue it down and paint it after it’s permanently attached? It looks like the stairs are not painted either. Could just be my tired old eyes though [:)].
I paint them when they go down, but have to go over them several times. The acrylic I’m using (Tamiya X-19) does not adhere well. The railings and stairs have one coat. I will go back with an 000 brush several times as I see a flaw. Yes it is tedious, but so is applying a rust streek to a porthole or door with the same brush.
Aaa the trials of 1/350 ships. Just wait till the rigging starts.
A small update, but it represents a ton of work. I have the PE railings on, now on to the rigging, boat booms, lifeboats, porthole baffles (in the original picture, probably for airflow in the July heat at Bikini), flagpoles Etc. Etc.
Here is the Eugen’s rigging so far. I still have some more to install and some trimming to do. I’m changing the color from black to more of a steel. The flag lanyards may change to a lighter color as well. I don’t like the way the black stands out.
I’m done with the rigging, now on to the installation of the small boats and boat booms. I don’t believe I will be able to make it to the Salt Lake contest. The medical bills are just too high this year. Next year our club should be holding it here in Boise so I’ll take the Eugen to that one.
Steve
I scratched the boat boom last night and need to work on the stern boom and small boats tonight. This weekend I may be able to get close to wrapping her up. All that will be left is the crew and those odd baffles in the portholes.
