here’s what i was working on the last few days. i built the hull and main superstructure, but failed to take any pics of it. i’ve masked the lower hull, already painted red, then i sprayed the deck with the gunship gray. the pics here are of me masking the decks so i can paint the navy aggressor gray.
i’m attempting to build the mcclusky, the frigate my little brother served on. it has the extended hull. like tankbuilder pointed out, there are no instructions for the option, so you have to wing it. the hull extension fit right on the back of the original stern, however, you really have to hack it up to get the flight deck to fit square. i’ve got pics of the extended flight deck, which overhangs the stern.
here’s my pics, i’m using rattle can enamels, as well as touching up with brushes of the same mm paint.
Looks great. Tim! Really shows in the third pic. I’m a fellow rattle canner too, I like the smooth finishes and glossy look myself. I even use hardware store enamels like Krylon and Vaspar when the correct color is available. Easier coverage on the larger scales (I do large scale aircraft too).
I still am having problems posting pics, what sort of camera/software do you use?
i have an airbrush, but no spray booth as of yet, there are plans beginning to form in my head to build one. it’s easier for me just now to paint in the garage.
i have an old olympus digi camera, and use paint shop pro 6 to crop and resize the pics.
if you want to post pics here, i believe you are best suited to use a third party site, like photobucket, then simply insert the ‘tag’ line into the photo icon in the post message box when you are typing. it’s pretty simple, let me know if you need help.
It looks so far so good, tim. But you’re a long way from finish line. Got any aftermarket PE set for your OHP? This is one from MK1 (Korea) I got it for about $26:
looong way from the finish line indeed! i was looking over the 100’s of parts left. the rails in the box seem really bulky when compared to your photo etch. i do not have any pe sets. but after looking at your pic, i might have to purchase one. do you order it direct from mk1, or are their retailors?
White Ensign’s instructions are, like their PE products, excellent. The railing parts are specific and are identified as to which piece goes where. Its up to you to figure the folding - but that is pretty simple.
The kit decks have the hundreds of locating holes for the kit supplied rails. They will fill with glue during installation. I use white glue to tack the parts in place then cement with CA to permenantly attach.
Since you’ve painted there is a small gotcha on the top of the bridge. There are a couple of solid raised octagon-shaped platforms. WEM would have you shave them off and replace the solid raised with a set of photo-etched legs supporting the platform, railing, and ladder. Or do like I did, just mount the folded platform assembly to the solid raised platform bases
Think of the VAT (Value Added Tax) as a national sales tax. The UK VAT is collected only on UK-delivered purchases.
In fact, if you go to the UK, make a purchase in a store and pay the VAT, it can be refunded by demonstrating that the purchases have been removed from the country. A couple of years ago there was a booth inside the secure area at Gatwick airport to handle such transactions.
