1/35 Zvezda M-30 Howitzer *new pics*

__EDIT__ For the new pics scroll down the page. You’ll spot them.

For the Forgotten War GB I built the 1/35 Zvezda M-30 122mm Howitzer. This was my first ever artillery model, suprisingly. The howitzer is painted in Tamya Acrylic Dark Green and the shell crates are painted in ModelMaster Enamel Italian Sand, with a burnt umber wash added later. Used a burnt umber wash over the entire howitzer, then added soot made from iron powder in certain areas. To seal the paint in, I used Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear Matte from a spray can. Pastels were used for the dirt one sees over the model, especially on the tires.

This kit did have some tricky fit issues in some areas, and some unclear instructions. But other then that I’d recommend this kit to anyone who has at least built a model or two before attempting this one. [tup]

All questions, comments, and suggestions welcome.[:)]

Good Job. I like it

Nice job, mg.mikael, but in my opnion, it needs some drybrushing to bring out those rivets and all the little details that are just hidden in that dark paint.

Some people have called this a discredited technique, but I could not disagree more! I use it all the time!

Hit it with a light drybrushing of tan, and watch it “pop”, as we say!

LeopardMan: Thanks for the comments!

the doog: Thanks for checkin’ out my build. I guess I should do some drybrushing. I went over the rivets with a graphite pencil, hoping to bring out detail. But it seems to have rubbed off in areas, and in other areas it’s not even noticable. Thank for the suggestion, I think I’ll try it. [:)]

Oh by the way probably, will end up making a simple wood base for the howitzer.

What kind of tan color do you reccomend I drybrush it in?[?] Some sort of sandy color or something more on the lines of yellow?

I would say something “dusty”–just plain “tan” would be perfect I think; yellow might look slightly bizarre?

Nice to see that kit built up. Here’s some pics for you of the real thing

Very nice! I built this kit quite some time ago and had some good fun with it. No major problems that I can recall at all. All it needs now is a base to put it in its ‘element’. As far as drybrushing goes, I tend to start off with a medium gray and then work some light earth tones into that.

Graphite pencil is, IMO, a poor choice for highlighting details. You really have to be up close to appreciate it, and the detail is lost in all but the most zoomed-in photographs. Definitely a lighter coat of your basecoat colour would be the way to go.

I took doog’s advice and finally got aroung to doing a tan drybrushing. Hope you enjoy the new pics of the improved M-30 Howitzer.[:)] Sorry if the pics are a bit washed out, my fault. As always all comments, suggestions, and questions welcome.

its defiantly looking better. The brushing brings out alot of detail.

Thanks for lookin’ and for the comment, jadgpanther302!
