I want to add a Kubelwagen to a diorama I’m building. On a bit of a budget though. Is the Italeri Kubelwagen worth the effort? Or should I save my money (and my sanity!) and save up and buy the Tamiya or Hasegawa efforts?
The Tamiya Kubelwagen with the desert wheels looks really interesting. (but the diorama is not Afrika korps!!)
The Italeri Kubelwagen is a decent kit. Be careful which Tamiya Kubelwagen. They have an old nasty one, the newer Afrika one and a European one as well.
Frankly guys why not build the Dragon KubelWagen. And when did Hasegawa make a 1/35 scale KubelWagen? I also have the Tamiya KubelWagen and it doesn’t look that bad since I added a few bits and pieces from the KubelWagen engine set. And I also found a technique for painting the canvas roof (the one in the retracted position) I painted it Khaki and then added a wash of black.
The Hasegawa Kubelwagen is made by Bego. The Bego Kubelwagen is also boxed by Dragon. Kubelwagen lineage goes like this:
Italeri=Testors & Heller reboxes
Bego=Hasegawa, Tasca & Dragon reboxes
Old Tamiya #35006
New Tamiya (Afrika #35238 & European #35213) Insert Monty Python joke here>
Dragon was big on reboxing other companies’ kits in the 1990s and adding to them to make the kits different. For example, the Dragon M4A3E8 and M4A3(76)HVSS were basically the Italeri M36B1/M4A3 Sherman hull with new turrets and suspension.
