I bought this 3 months ago [shortly after they first came out] and I finally finished it off yesterday. Aside from the total lack of seats in the rear, I was very impressed with the kit, and the build was real nice. No AM parts, just a straight from the box build.

Thanks. It also dawned on me that it looks like its Helo Drab in these pics. Its not. Its a mix of olive drab lightened with Ghost gray. Here is a pic from our last IPMS meeting [the day I finished it] that shows it under brighter lights.
Very nice job! I think I’ll stick to 1/48 for the Chinook. Of course if I happened to come across a very, very good deal I probably couldn’t resist.
The shade of OD in the first set of photos is closer to the shade of OD of the A models that I worked on.

Are the rotors attached to the aircraft by a shaft & tab, or are they removable? The reason I ask… if they are removable, you need to switch aft to fwd to aft so everything will be turning the right direction.[;)]
That’s a big bird… where do you have it displayed at? I guess I’d have to hang it up out in my work room, as it has a 10ft ceiling! (not really, it’s because that’s where I would find it if I ever left with it on a shelf or table in the house) [:O]

Did you find on yours that the bottom seem was a bumber and probably one of the kits weakest part aside from how they set up the FM antena posts?
Hey Hook, Yes, it does look good in the sun. And yes, the rotors are shafted and I left them removable. I didnt realize I got them on in reverse. I have it displayed in the same cabinet as my armor and soft-skin vehicles. I have the rotors stored in another room. As to the weathering, it was my first attempt at pre-shading. I’m very pleased and will be using this a lot more. As to the subtle chipping and scrapes, they actually were accidental. When I went to peel off the window masks, the paint hadnt fully hardened. The paint scraped and chipped on the bottom of the nose, and the front of the side skirts and a couple other areas.Once I noticed it, I realized its probably where it would receive wear anyway landing in brush. So I just filled in the paint scrapes with a silver artist pencil. And then chipped the hell outta the edge of the ramp where it drags on the ground. Again, first time I had used this technique, will be using it again.
Papa-Echo, I’m actually Army Guard. I was an MP but I got bored and switched to aviation. Traded my Mk19 for a minigun. Best trade ever! The unit I’m with now is deployed at the moment. And yes, I was VERY disappointed in the bottom of the hook. Every other seem on the model came out great after filling and sanding, but the bottom one still looks like CRAP. The top hull seem was pretty bad too, but its covered by the vane so you cant tell. Its like the fuselage bows out in the middle like a football.
Glad to hear your enjoying your time serving…My reserve time was kinda boring. I went to Fort Jackson for Basic and ait…then it was off to Ft. Lawton Seattle Wa. 84-86.
Yep that 1/35 Hook bottom was a drag…The good news is that Italeri 1/48 Chinook got it right and made the complete bottom a seperate part! …the bad news is that the transmision cover on top is not…I would have to see it first but I may make that a scratch built part…I hate seams…I cheat when I can.

The D model is a newer version, 1980s to current timeframe, than the A model which was a Vietnam era airframe. The D has a new rear sail, single rear wheels, and differently-shaped blades, to name a few differances. The CH-46 is a totally different helicopter. It is smaller, has small sponsons on only the rear wheels, and tricycle landing gear, etc. It is nowhere near as large as a CH-47. That’s a great looking Hook. My personal opinion is that it looks much better under the brighter light. (My builds tend to look better under dim light). Congrats on an impressive build. I’m still debating on 1/48 or 1/35 Hook. That color of OD and grey looks great. Do you have a specific mix ration, or is it an “until-it-looks-right” kind of mix?

Mix ratio??? LOL. Um, not really. I usually measure by a mark I put on the glass bottle I mix it in. I’d say it was around 10:1 Tamiya OD Green to Testors Light Grey [both acrylic]. I primed the entire model with primer grey [walmart $.88 spray can] then used flat black to preshade. Then I mixed up the color coat, thinned it about 2:1 thinner to paint, and started with the front and worked back. I tried to keep the spray pattern circular with some verticle passes. In low light it looks darker, but in bright light and sunlight, it becomes more of a warm green/brown. And the preshading shows up much better. I kept the color coats thin enough so the preshading is visible up close, but from 3ft or more, you cant tell. Once the weather gives us some more sun here, I’ll see about getting some full sun pics.
