1/32 Volksjager complete!

This is the Revell 1/32 He 162 I’ve been building for the Battle of Germany GB over on the GB forum.

I used the Airwaves replacement bulkhead/ejector seat pack, along with the resin wheels from the same source. Not the best bits of AM I’ve used, both the seat and the wheels requiring a lot of clean up.

Decals are a combination of those from the kit, with Cutting Edge set 32065. Unfortunately the Cutting Edge directions, and thus decals, for this A/C are incorrect, both in terms of the general camo scheme as well as the Werkenummer when compared with the MBI book on the Spatz. I ended up having to piece the Werkenummer together, finally resorting to making a couple of '3’s from cut up '0’s!

I detailed the engine with fuse wire and sections of insulation from fine telecoms wire to simulate connectors etc. I also scratchted the interior to the cannon bay door, as the kit part is somewhat approximate in it’s likenesss to the original.

All paints are Gunze acrylics, post shaded with with either darker or lighter mixes of the base colour. Finally all the panel lines were given a light coat of very dilute black/brown to represent the dirt that seemed to cling to all the puttied areas on these machines.

Thanks for letting me share.

Karl

Very impressive, Karl. I like it a lot!!! This plane is very interesting to me, the look of the engine on it’s back is simply fascinating. You’re example is top notch. When you added the black/brown, did you airbrush it?

Look really nice. I need to get me one of those.

What an extremely beautiful job on the Salamander, Karl. Everything is well done!

Regards, Dan

Outstanding Karl, a real masterpiece. The build is just stunning. Congratulations…

Steve

Outstanding work and an interesting plane. The weathering is quite good, not too much nor too little.

Hey, alright…very nice.
It has a faded, dirty look that makes it look very realistic - nicely done.
Thanks for posting the pics.

Excellent build. I’m really impressed with how life-like it looks. The hard work you must’ve put into it really shows!

Hello Karl,

Nice job mate, I hope I can do justice on mine when I get around to making them, I have 3 to do, with Aires, CMK, Airwaves and Eduard sets to put in them. Oh and Fritz decals and Eagle Cals… decisions decisions…

I also have about 6 or 7 do do in 1/48…

I love this aircraft, have most of the books you can lay your hands on for this plane. Some of the pics I have seen for this bird “White 1” show it to have solid black crosses on the underside, not the thin black outline. (it is very difficult to make out in B/W photos, but the paint scheme of white 1 is the almost the same as white 21 which does show this) and the Werknummer is not shown (some sources claim 120013, others 120027).

Great job and keep `em coming.

Hey Karl!..WOW! that’s very well done. I like your model very much. Superb work and an interesting subject. Nice job.

Jerry

Very nice, Karl! You really hit the mark on that build.

Very nice! I really like the finish and markings you have put on this one, excellent work. Darren.

Well done Karl. Always liked the Salamander and your example really shines. I like the subtle, yet effective weathering.

Guys, thanks for all the kind words, much appreciated.

Rad, I airbrushed a very dilute mix, I’m talking about a 1;10 paint to thinner ration, over all the panel lines etc. Glad you liked the build, the Spatz is certainly a very different looking machine.

Tanky, you know you need too!

Lee, Wulf, these aircraft had a very short service life, therefore didn’t suffer much in the way of wear. however the surface finish was very rough, which appeared to turn them into dirt magnets.

Thud, I only managed to find one pic of this bird in the MBI book, and that only shows the rear half of the A/C, which does confirm the colour of the tail fins if nothing more. Look forward to seeing your build.

Thanks for letting me share.

Karl

Very nicely done, Karl! The painting and finish are fabulous.

Mark

Great looking job on the build.

Oh my, that is a beauty! Nicely done! [tup]

Great job Karl, I like yours so much you got me interested in that kit, so I went out and got one from my LHS. You did some very nice work! [tup] [tup]

Hello again Karl,

I have a German book that has a photo of Lt Scmitts log book, which shows he flew White 1, White 2, White 5 and White 7. All these dont have the Werk Nummer listed, but the planes he flew without squadron numbers are listed as 120013 and 120068 (from what I could translate, these were just ferry flights). He flew White 5 against a mosquito on 25th April, then the White 1 against the claimed Typhoon kill on 4th May. Above this photo is a frontal picture of White 1, which appears to show a dark cross on the underside. There is also a great photo of this bird on the front sheet for the Fritz decals which shows a 3/4 view.

I think you did a great job, and she really looks great. It is hard to prove or disprove alot of things, especially from black and white photos. Even Im not 100% convinced myself of the actual colour scheme (70, 71, 81 or 83?), werk nummer, colour on the intake cover etc. I think Ill just have to bite the bullet and paint it the way I want, and use the decals I feel are correct. No one can say 100% that we`re wrong ?

Nice job, Karl !

I like the clean look. I’ve seen some of these built with EXTREME weathering, but the aircraft wasn’t in servive long enough. The appearance of yours looks very realistic.

Well done !
