I think my next project (after I finish the two I have going on now) is going to be another F4 Phantom since I haven’t built one in years.
Since there are tons of them around, does anyone have recommendations on who makes the best quality kit in 1/32 scale? I’m not real picky on the variant.
Tamiya is probably your best bet. But be ready to shell out a lot of $. You will pay around or more than $100. Tamiya has a C model, an early E model without the flaps and a pair fo J models one from the Navy and the other from the USMC. The USMC version has Mk. 82’s and other ammunition that the Navy version does not have and costs quite a bit more.
Ahhhhh, that’s perfect. The “E” model even has a shark’s mouth on it. I’ve got something about airplanes with teeth [:)] I’ve got a P-40 in Flying Tiger livery as well as an F-105G I’m working on with teeth on it. That will go very well with the “Collection”.
Tamiya is the way to go. The Revell kit is much cheeper, but by the time you get the after market intakes, cockpit and seats you will spend almost as much for it. With the Tamiya, SOB and you will have a good model.
I think the Revell Kit is not bad as it from the first look
It is an accurate kit and a truly 1:32 (the Tam. not)
You have to remove allof these Battle Damage plattes from the Tam kit.
The radome of the Revell kit is the only problem and has to be changed, but it’s not very difficult.
But If you even buy all of the resin/photoetched kit you’re cheepier with the Revell kit …
Ok if you get a Tam kit with less money I have to pass
Personally speaking, I “just” finished building the 1:32 Revell “Phabulous Phantom” I got as a bithday present last year. While it builds into a decent looking kit, there are quite a few fit problems requiring lots of putty and a bit of plasticard - intakes, front nose section to main body and wing assembly to main body. If you want to pose your model with the arrestor hook down, forget it…it’s too short. The supplied struts that hold the canopies open are poor and no matter how hard I tried, I had to finish the model with the canopies closed. Also the tiny parts of the landing gear are a real pain in the posterior to attach. The fit, length and shape of some parts are horribly wrong. The main struts are quite sturdy though. The decals are extremely good and settle down quite well with a normal does of Solvaset.
If you have alot of patience, you might enjoy the Revell kit.
I didn’t mind building the Revell kit and think it turned out to be a good build, no tamiya but decent. I don’t usually get the detail sets and like to pose with canopy closed so the canopy actuators was not a problem for me.
