I am building the Tamiya F-15E. I have done some research and found that, for the specific jet I am going to model, I need 8 GBU-12’s. The Tamiya kit only comes with GBU-10’s.
Now I found that Black Box makes resin GBU-12’s but they list them as the ‘Navy/Marine’ verson.
Is there a difference between the Navy -12 and the Air Force -12 cosmetically? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
The Navy uses a thermal coating on the bomb casing. It would look like a rough coating on the bomb. Simply sand smooth and you will have the USAF version.
Thanks Berny…sorry it took so long to reply to your posting.I have been out of town all week.I thought maybe that that might have been the only difference in bombs, but since I was only around helicopters when I was in the service, I never had the chance to look at ordinance close-up.Thanks again for your reply! Take care…
I used the BlackBox GBU-12’s on my A-10 and they worked fine. I don’t recall them having a rough surface, but it’s been a while since I did them. BB could have missed that or I could be wrong and actually sanded them smooth. Either way they worked out fine.
I don’t have any good photos of them but photos of my A-10 are Here There is one photo that shows them better than the others, and it is at This Link
