I’m building a couple of Skyraiders, one of '50s vintage (marked as being from CVA-19 USS Hancock), and a special one…I’m planning to build an updated one. No special plans yet, except it will have a turboprop in place of the old radial engine. The ‘Spad’ will live again!
Who makes a 1/32 scale Skyraider? Is it a vacuum formed model? The old Revell kit is about 1/40th scale and is the largest injection molded Skyraider kit I know of.
'Tis a greater sin that a great plane be mothballed. Sorry, but I have a soft spot in my heart for good airplanes that are cast aside, especially in favor of a jet. A radial can be quite the pain to keep going, and turboprops are much more reliable. So we swap the turboprop into the Skyraider, and use the weight savings to carry more fuel…or armor…ect.
I’ll post it as soon as I can. First things first, though…I’ve been so busy/lazy with the holidays, I really need to make a webpage to post some pics of my models.
The spAD, Sandy, Skyraider is indeed a noble airplane, but at last her time is past. Memorializing her with a 1/32 scale model is indeed a fitting tribute.
The Navy tried that swap for you, Google the A2D Skyshark. Unfortunately it didn’t work out well, having a shorter range and less payload. The early unreliable Turboprop engine not helping matters.
I have seen a picture of an A-1H that they were originally going to release last year but, apparently found that there were some inaccuracies so they are retooling.
I’m looking forward to see if they come through.[:D]
