1/200 Trumpeter Bismarck build

Hey there,

I’m in the middle of the Bismarck build, using the full MK1 photoetch and wooden deck kit.

I’ve never used a wooden deck, so any tips would be much appreciated.

I’ve been at it for about 4 months and figure it will take another 4 to get her done. She’s a monster!

Ran across this and thought you might find it interesting. 1/100 scale Bismark

Hmmm… just tested link and for some reason you will need to cut/paste it.[:$]

Wow, that is impressive! The detail is incredible. A friend of mine has his father’s scratch built Bismarck which is somewhere around that scale. It was on display at the old Ottawa naval museum. The detail however is nothing like that. Mind you it was built in the 70’s well before today’s make your photo etch was being used. I would never have time or space for something like that. I can already see where a ton of detail is missing from the 1/200 scale.

Flavor, I’ve built wooden decks for all wood ship models. Are the decks for plastic ships in individual strips or of precut sizes? By the way, what you have done to date looks great!

Thanks! Yes they are precut wood sections, basically very sticky stickers. I have laid them down and gave them a wash. So far so good, hopefully they hold up over time. I will post some more update pics later today.

Thats looking good, those little Arados are awesome

Thanks!

Here are a couple more.

My only suggestion on decks is to remove inside pieces before outside waste. On some decks the deck is weak after outer waste removed and that makes it harder to handle to get inside areas cut out.

I have this kit and recently bought the big Pontos upgrade for it (the older on with the new upgrade set). I can’t wait to get started on this and would like to see some new pictures if you have any. Also, are you running across any big issues that I/we should watch out for?

Okay…I want one too. I have the Arizona in the stash but that Bismark is a beaut too.

Some very nice detail and work.

Hello!

How much does a kit like that cost nowadays?

Thanks in advance for the info and have a nice day

$263 at scalehobbyist.com minus the AM goodies.

It’s been over a year since my last post. I haven’t finished, had to stop for a year, personal issues. Anyway I’m about 95% done and will post some pics tonight perhaps. There is nothing really to watch out for as far as the kit is concerned. The PE set I have, MKII I think it’s called, is lacking in the instruction department in terms of details. So making sure you are keeping on top of the aftermarket PE, when and where to use it is about all I could say. Oh the 2 cranes, I ditched the PE cable and just made my own using nylon thread, the PE was too finicky.

Those wooden decks really look great.

Just finished a book about her.

There was a fair amount of back and forth, that ultimately did her in, regarding being towed by a U Boat. In the end it was decided to fly off her War Diary in an Arado. But it was a steam rather than shell fired catapult and couldn’t be used. Then an idea to lower it into the sea for the U Boat to recover. But it wasnt possible. So they shot up the floats and dumped the plane with the documents into the sea.

I’ve gother this kit in my stash as well. I paid $400 from my LHS though, but the owner AL threw in the Trump metal barrels and propeller upgrade kit. He also threw in the Master AA barrel upgrades too. Dan they are small! Next I want to pick up the real wood deck, but they cost about as much as the model itself! Anybody have a good place to pick one up for less than $300?! Would like to get the complete PE set as well which includes better handrails, but again almost as much as the model itself (On thiefbay). Really want to start this kit but man is it daunting. It’s a beast though! The hull measure about 50" long so you need to make sure you have a good place to put it.

Check out this guy’s build of the Trumpeter Bismarck. It’s a beautifully done model, although I think he overdid the weathering.
