Just a little side project I found on my desk from a couple years back, as I take a break from building and waiting for outdoor weather to improve for rattle can painting. When I left it off, all that was blocked in was the flesh and a blue grey base coat on the uniform. I have been working on it for the last week with some Vallejo acrylic sets I have laying around, and it is still ongoing.
I have cleaned up the shadow under his lips, he looks slightly less like a 2 year old eating spagetti now. I also hit the buttons and metal parts of the lanyard with gold, I was trying to go non metallic, but it just wasn’t working to me.
This is my first bust, and found it rather pleasant. Any feedback, suggestions, or tips is welcome! (Aside from use a lower res camera!)
Thats very nice, lovely work on the fine details and the face is very nive. I have done a few bust, mostly Youngs, but never one from MJ. How did you find it for detail and fit.
It’s funny, I have always found oils and enamels too intimidating, and have always used acrylics. Then at the last MMSI meeting I tuned into their consensus was acrylics are “black magic.” Go figure. My gut check time will be adding some washes to tie the layers together.
Bish: This casting was really clean, and there was just the head and torso glue together. No seam at all at the collar. The crisp molding really helpd with the fur, which is based in Panzergrau and dry brushed with 4 layers of brown and buff mixtures. If all their products are like this, I give a big thumbs up.
Thanks Robert, that sounds good. With the Youngs busts i find they are so well made that i don’t refer to it as building and painting but rather paint and assemble. This sounds pretty much the same.
Thanks guys, much appreciated! I hope to finish him up this weekend by gluing the head in place and mounting to a stable base. Then some more minor touch ups.
I may hit it with matte coat again, there seems to be a shine in the lighting, but am otherwise calling this one done. Head affixed with a new bottle of Gator Glue, and base is a spare wargaming base I had laying around.
Yeah, acrylics can be easier to use on figures than oils. Or, at least, you can pick up the techniques faster than with oils. I think it takes longer to practice to improve your technique with oils. At least, that was my experience.
